Instrumented Coaching
William Bergquist
Abstract: Many clients wish to concentrate primarily on their own internal sources of wisdom and insight when seeking to improve their performance or manage complex problems. These clients usually prefer to participate in reflective coaching sessions, especially if their coach adopts an appreciative perspective. Given the sponsoring organization’s expectations and needs, other clients, however, have to consider not only their own perceptions but also the perceptions of other people. They want to compare their own internal perspectives and insights with those of the men and women with whom they work. These clients often turn to instrumented coaching. These clients ask their coach for assistance in gathering and helping to make sense of data gathered from many sources. Instrumented coaching provides both the data from other people and the vehicle for interpreting these data.
