ABSTRACT: In this article, Lee Salmon explores the evolution of executive coaching in the U.S. federal government over the past two decades and discusses factors leading to its acceptance as an important tool for leadership development. Salmon discusses a number of ways that coaching is being used in government agencies and presents two agency case studies as examples of how coaching programs are designed, implemented, and the results from evaluation impact studies. Trends for coaching in government are also discussed.
